Metso's New PaperIQ Select Raises The Bar For Online Paper Analysis And Quality Upset Control
Metso Automation has introduced a new,
ground-breaking paper quality control system, called PaperIQ Select. The system
has extended online quality and process analysis functions and paper machine
disturbance control capabilities. These enhancements are provided by new paper
quality measurements, online machine direction (MD) and cross direction (CD)
spectral analysis and a completely new approach to managing control of the
scanning function.
This revolutionary selective and adaptive paper web
measuring technique suits the different dynamic measurement and control
requirements of steady state production and machine upset conditions like
breaks and grade changes, and precision paper edge analysis. All this is
possible with new intelligent scanners, ultra fast measurements and data
collection. The IQScanner-i is designed for wide machine applications, up to
and beyond 11meters in trim width. The IQScanner-R is specifically designed for
narrower machines, under 5.5 meters.
End of traditional scanning
The new adaptive, situation-based patented scanning technique
replaces and vastly improves the analysis and control capabilities of the
single speed, front to back scanning action of traditional QCS systems. Now, it
is possible to have variable scanning speeds and scan widths as well as MD and
CD control responses to suit normal production conditions or upset states. The
result is less broke because of faster start-ups and grade changes, and quicker
recovery from breaks and coating blade changes.
Fast on-line paper
analysis
Based on selected variability triggers, the system
automatically selects an analysis mode. MD paper variation can be reported in
several frequency bands by the spectral analysis capability built into the
system. Paper quality variability can therefore be related to upstream process
variations, and corrections can be made. The variability analysis can be used
to benchmark machine variability for continuous improvement programs. The
system also provides high resolution, high speed analysis of the critical sheet
edge areas, for better edge quality.
Full selection of innovative
measurements
The new PaperIQ Select includes measurements for
weight, ash, moisture, spectral color, laser and magnetic caliper, optical
printing surface properties, image analysis formation, porosity, reel
micro-diameter and hardness, web tension profile, plus high speed IR detection
of wet end moisture levels.
One of the totally new features is full
utilization of multi-purpose infrared detection. The same multiple wavelength
spectral analysis technique can be used to selectively measure moisture,
opacity, fiber weight and ash levels, even silicon. The types of measurements
required can be selected for the application. For instance, a nuclear basis
weight sensor is not mandatory for tissue grades.
