Icecom and KPN co-operate in developing innovative SIP-based services

Icecom launches new CoIP platform products designed for the operators' demands. KPN, the largest telecommunications operator in the Netherlands, utilizes Icecom's OperatorEngine- product to develop experimental services for the next generation communications. Icecom delivers SIP-driven server infrastructure to KPN and the parties develop tailored CoIP services for KPN's trials on fixed and mobile communication.

Icecom OperatorEngine and other Icecom's products are presented at VON Europe in Berlin 7-8th of November.

Icecom, a CoIP technology provider based in Finland, has launched new CoIP (Communications over IP) platform targeted for Internet service providers. Icecom OperatorEngine brings together Presence services, Instant Messaging, voice and video communications on a single IP-based platform in order to produce pre-IMS services to the SME and the residential customers. Icecom OperatorEngine collaborates with networks such as mobile, cable, fixed or DSL, thus enabling Fixed-Mobile Convergence. Icecom OperatorEngine provides full-featured IP communication services with the possibility of accessing a legacy networks.

"Icecom's solution includes applications such as presence, Instant Messaging, and a possibility for breakouts with MSN and Jabber. With Icecom OperatorEngine operators can produce CoIP services that exceed existing alternatives of customers such as MSN or Skype. When operators combine IP-communication services provided by Icecom OperatorEngine with their own additional services such as billing and customer support, they can create a special competitive edge. Combination of services creates an advantage over competitors, and operators can offer services under their own brand name" Mikko Elo, Business Development Director of Icecom reveals.

"Our goal is to provide an attractive alternative in deploying rich communications services", says Kim Jakobsson, Icecom's CTO . "Where the IMS position itself as a core network service of the switching technology, the CoIP services over Internet evolve on a much more rapid pace. We bring the services to the network in IMS - friendly manner; the services are compatible to each other".

The Icecom OperatorEngine uses SIP (Session Initation Protocol) as its main communications protocol. The OperatorEngine has been developed to match existing mainstream specifications that ensure interoperability with third party equipment. Icecom OperatorEngine supports IMS (Internet Multimedia Subsystem) integration, which allows the operators to move forward with the services while building up IMS core network. Icecom offers two different type of editions of the OperatorEngine; a Basic Edition for start-ups and ITSPs that are entering the CoIP market, and a Carrier Edition for carrier-class implementations.
