A new gear-drive operation-monitoring unit, designed to enhance the performance and maintenance planning of both new and existing mechanical gear drives, has been developed by Metso Drives Oy, Finland and will be exhibited for the first time at the 2005 Hannover Fair on Stand G21 in Hall 25

The new unit (Fig. 1) monitors and reports the gear drive's loading data and rotation speed, as well as oil temperature, and activates alarms if the pre-set limits are exceeded. It also estimates the time when the next maintenance check and oil change will be required and saves all the above performance data to a compact flash (CF) memory card for later analysis. The information is easy to access via a display unit or through SMS with GSM. The unit has an RS232 interface.

Alarms can be set for gear drive overload, excessive oil temperature, the need for maintenance or an oil change, oil pressure drop, oil-filter clogging, drop in oil level or undue vibration, for example.

Process control and maintenance

The continuous availability of the above-mentioned information means that process control can be optimized and mechanical damage can be prevented. Service requirements can be predicted, maintenance operations can be pre-planned and unscheduled shut-downs are avoided.
