A new automatic handling- and feeding system for pulp bales has been delivered by Vesme Systems Oy of Kauhajoki, Finland to Stora Enso's Veitsiluoto mill. The installation, which prepares pulp for two of the mill's four paper machines, is unique because the whole process of pulp preparation, material feeding and reception is handled by a single operator. Current production is approx. 550t/d, but the system has been designed for up to 700t /d.

The pulper and associated equipment and the automation system were supplied by Metso Paper; the feed system and accessories were delivered by Vesme Systems Oy. Design and supply of the feed system result from co-operation between Vesme and a network of specialists who cooperate to ensure the reliability essential to continuous production.

Handling 45 bales/hour

The systems at Stora Enso Veitsiluoto link the pulp mill in Kemijärvi to the paper machine in Veitsiluoto over 200 km away. During development, changes were made to the bale-binding system to cut costs and improve wire removal. Transportation between the two locations has been modified, and unloading each 40-ton-payload takes only 30 minutes using a forklift.

Up to 20 bales at a time are loaded onto the conveyor which carries them to a transverse conveyor where the bales are aligned and then turned through 180° (see photograph), before they pass to the automatic de-wiring machine, where the binding wires are removed. The bales continue to the metal detection station, where each bale is checked to ensure that all wire and metal particles, which could harm the pulper, have been removed, before passing to the pulper feed conveyor and into the pulper.

Minimal supervision with 99% reliability

This installation at Stora Enso is controlled by a single skilled operator, who also loads the bales and unloads the trucks. He is also solely responsible for the production and monitoring of the pulper.

Overall reliability for the whole system is set at 97 %, even for de-wiring. Each bale has 3 wires, so only 3 unsuccessful wire removals per 100 bales (300 wires) are permitted, which equals 99% reliability.
