BREAKTHROUGH IN PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY
New Digital Camera/Software Package from Sweden produces Shots with Infinite Depth of Field

The new, patented FocOz® digital camera and software package launched by Scandinavian Nightvision AB of SE-181 56 Lidingö, Sweden takes the next major step in professional photography. It enables the operator to produce high quality photos with an infinite depth of field - i.e. compositions in which the whole scene is in optimum focus, from the closest foreground objects to those on the horizon.

The FocOz camera (Fig. 1) incorporates a newly developed unit with its own memory for storing focus settings as well as a microprocessor for automatic focus control. A 5 Megapixel sensor takes a series of differently focused shots at 0.3 second intervals - three for most compositions including moving targets, and up to eight shots for still life subjects. The photographer chooses the focus settings.

The sequence of images is downloaded to a computer using a USB (Universal Serial Bus) interface. The FocOz software selects the best parts of the individual frames and merges them, like a mosaic, into a final composition with superior depth of field (see Figs. 2a, b and c). FocOz software is designed to operate on Windows 2000 Professional and XP Professional systems.

Portrait, Product, Advertising, News and Nature Photography

FocOz technology has many benefits for professional photographers and advanced amateurs alike. For example, at press conferences it is now possible to show several of the principal participants in focus on the same photo, regardless of their distance from the camera. The same applies to group photography in a studio - the subjects can be at random distances from the camera, yet all are portrayed in the best focus - which constitutes a breakthrough in the art.

For product photography, every little detail of a scene or a whole range of products can be sharply in focus; in advertising, it is simple to produce extreme supermacros and other 'special effects' with features in focus from a few centimetres to infinity.

In nature photography, for the first time, this new technology can be used to portray not only small plants or animals in detail (macro photo), but also to reveal the minutiae of their habitat or environment just as clearly in the same picture.

Using the software

FocOz software is easy to use and runs on high-end computers with up-to-date versions of Windows. Press the "New Project" button, select a name for the set of images and other information needed to produce a FocOz image and a project file is created to store the data. A standard open-image dialogue window is used to select the differently focused images. To create a FocOz image, simply press the "Process" button and wait for 2 or 3 minutes (speed depends on the PC's performance) until the processed FocOz image can be viewed.

Hardware requirements

Because image merging involves heavy-duty calculations and data processing, the hardware must be of a high standard, including an Intel P4/2GHz or AMD XP2000+ or faster processor, 512 MB of RAM or more, a true colour 24bit XGA (1024x 768) display or better, and an available parallel line-printer port for the hardware key.

Background to Scandinavian Nightvision

Scandinavian Nightvision was founded in the 1980s by Sven-Åke Afsenius, a Swedish inventor with a degree in optics, to develop, manufacture and market high-tech image-intensifier nightvision instruments which have been supplied to the Swedish armed forces and to Simrad Optronics AS in Norway amongst others. Both the FocOz camera and software are covered by patents.
