NEW GENERATION OF TDLAS GAS MONITORS FROM NORWAY
Formation of new NEO subsidiary dedicated to the supply of laser-based gas monitors

NEO Monitors AS is a new subsidiary of Norsk Elektro Optikk AS (NEO), which has been formed to take over the manufacture, marketing and service of the laser-based gas and dust monitors using tuneable diode laser (TDLAS) technology that were formerly supplied by NEO. NEO is one of Norway's principal research companies in the electro-optics field, working with industrial partners and with research institutes on national and international projects.

Unlike conventional UV or IR spectrographic instruments, NEO Monitors' instruments employ the measurement principle known as 'single line spectroscopy', which eliminates cross interference from other gases and enables very low concentrations of gas to be detected. The company is currently the largest commercial supplier of TDLAS gas monitors for industrial applications. More than 1000 such NEO monitors are currently operating in over 30 countries.

New compact, high-performance model

The first new product to be launched by NEO Monitors is the LaserGas II (see photograph) which has applications in emission monitoring and process control across a wide range of industrial applications e.g. in steel, aluminium and other non-ferrous metal, chemical, petroleum and cement production, power generation and waste incineration.

Designed for continuous in-situ monitoring, LaserGas models offer high sensitivity - detecting in the ppb and low ppm ranges. Response time is less than 2 seconds. All LaserGas instruments can be supplied as stack, open path or dual path configurations. The range includes models for detecting O2, HCl, HF, NH3, CO, CO2 H2O, H2S, HCN, NO, N2O, CH4 and other hydrocarbons, as well as for detecting two different gases or a gas and temperature simultaneously using a single laser.

The LaserGas II model comprises only two basic components: transmitter and receiver, each of which includes air-purging and alignment mechanisms as well as the appropriate electronics. All LaserGas models operate over the range 2-3 bar maximum pressure and temperatures up to 500ºC, but it is possible to operate at up to 20 bar and 1500ºC with some gases.

More new features

An important new feature included in LaserGas II is an Ethernet connection to enable communication via the Internet.

The LaserGas II has 3 current loop (4-20mA) inputs and three current loop outputs. Switch-mode voltage converters have been included to reduce power consumption. The instrument's input voltage is 18-36VDC. A separate power supply box with input 100 - 240V, 50/60 Hz is provided.

Measurement principle

With LaserGas monitors, a single gas absorption line with no interference is chosen in the near IR spectral range. A single-mode diode laser operating at room temperature scans the single absorption line. A detector sited opposite the laser detects the light absorption caused by the target gas molecules, after which the gas concentration is calculated. No compensation is required for the presence of other gases. Automatic correction for temperature and pressure variations is included.

Simplified maintenance and servicing

LaserGas II monitors incorporate fault diagnostics and all the critical hardware components are sited in field-replaceable modules. Most maintenance can therefore be done on site, thereby increasing the availability of the instrument. Improved self-testing on start-up and facilities for logging system-diagnostics information are also included in LaserGas II.

There are no moving parts and no consumables are required. Calibration intervals are typically 6-12 months and zero drift is negligible. Purging with dry, oil-free pressurized air or nitrogen prevents dust and other contaminants from fouling the optical windows.
