Noise and vibration are reduced by rubber gaskets in the Victaulic grooved-end piping systems at Singapore's Esplanade - Theaters on the Bay. This contributes to acoustical excellence at the new world-class concert hall.Grooved-end couplings join pipes and valves in cooling towers 198 meters away from the chiller pump room . Victaulic piping can reduce installation costs by up to 30%.

GROOVED PIPING METHOD IMPROVES ACOUSTICS AND LOWERS CONSTRUCTION COST AT SINGAPORE'S ESPLANADE - THEATERS ON THE BAY

Concertgoers at Singapore's dramatic new Esplanade Theaters On The Bay are unlikely to give much thought to the workings of the climate control and fire protection systems buried deep in the building's infrastructure. But an important contributing factor in the hall's high sound quality is the specialized grooved-end piping supplied by Victaulic Asia-Pacific. Rubber gaskets within the grooved-end joints significantly reduce vibration and noise in the thousands of connections throughout the building.

One of the world's most acoustically advanced spaces, the 1,800 seat Concert Hall is also insulated from the noise and vibration of nearby road, subway and boat traffic by its unique design as an inner building floating within an outside shell.

Installed cost savings of 10-30%

Improving sound quality was an important factor considered by the mechanical and engineering contractors PWD Consultants Pte, Ltd., and MAE Engineering, Ltd., in the selection. However, equally important were the reliability and cost advantages of grooved end pipe joining as compared with flanged, threaded or welded joints.

Because it is lighter in weight and can be installed easily without skilled labor, the grooved-end method provides total installed cost savings of 10-30 percent over other pipe coupling methods. Grooved end piping requires fewer bolts than flanged connections. In addition, it does not involve the open flame and attendant fire hazard of welding; or the leakage problems commonly associated with threaded pipe. For convenience, piping may be cut to length and grooved on the job site with simple tools.

Extensive Technical Support Services

The contractors also took advantage of a full array of technical support offered by Victaulic. The company advised in product selection and provided field installation training for contractors and installers. Piping specialists were assigned to the construction site for day-to-day assistance and to assure proper installation. The large inventory carried by the company's Singapore distributor was also a significant factor in the selection.

Eight lines of 450mm and two lines of 350mm condenser water supply and return piping connect the chiller pump room with cooling towers about 198 meters away. Rigid couplings join the straight sections and special couplings that accommodate deflection caused by pipe movement are installed at all bends. Victaulic grooved end piping and fittings in 250-450 mm sizes connect the seven chiller and pump systems. The sprinkler piping system uses Victaulic FireLock fittings, a CAD-developed, hydrodynamic design which have a shorter center-to-end dimension than standard fittings.
