START-UP OF NEW ROLL-WRAPPING LINE FROM RAUMASTER
AT FRANTSCHACH PULP & PAPER CZECH

The new Spiralmaster roll wrapping line from Raumaster Oy of Rauma, Finland was delivered and successfully commissioned at the Steti Mill of Frantschach Pulp & Paper in the Czech Republic ahead of schedule in September 2002. The new roll wrapping machine and its associated comprehensive roll handling system (see Fig. 1), with a capacity of 40 rolls/h, have been designed to handle the increased capacity of the rebuilt paper machine.

Raumaster was selected as the supplier for Steti after careful comparison with other manufacturers, and this order continues the company's long-standing relationship and history of successful deliveries to other Frantschach mills. Frantschach has mills in Austria, Poland and Sweden as well as in the Czech Republic, with a total production of 1.4 million metric tons mainly of CCM, kraft and market pulp. Frantschach sales in 2001 totalled € 622 million with personnel of over 2000.

Spiral wrapping concept

The recently developed Spiralmaster wrapping station employs the spiral wrapping method which uses a single width of paper to wrap all paper rolls, irrespective of their width. This offers considerable financial savings because it eliminates the need for a variety of wrapping paper sizes to be kept in stock. For example, the paper rolls produced at Steti range from 350 mm to 3200 mm in width and 600 mm to 1500 mm in diameter. Maximum roll weight is 5000 kg.

Fig. 2 and Fig. 3 show the Spiralmaster wrapping technique from the front and back respectively.

The centering station, crimping arms and header press at Steti are standard components supplied by Saimatec Engineering Oy, a long-term partner and associated company in the Raumaster Group.

Wide choice of wrapping materials

The Spiralmaster concept by Raumaster can also be employed with other wrapping materials such as laminated or coated kraft, radial or axial stretch film or a combination of stretch film and kraft. In addition, the modular Spiralmaster wrapping system can grow with the capacity and protection requirements of the papermaker in a rapidly changing business.

Latest control technology

In addition to the Spiralmaster machine, the Steti installation includes the winder deck, slat conveyors, lifting and lowering scoops, turning and sorting conveyors, a lowerator, an up-ender and storage conveyors, and roll marking/identification devices as well as a comprehensive control system. The control system uses the latest bus technology which enables maintenance to be carried out via a Remote Care connection from Raumaster offices.
